How many lights do I need on an outdoor tree?

Have you ever wondered how to wrap a tree, and how many lights you might need, but don’t know where to start? Whether you’re a mathematical genius or someone who’s simply the best at educated guesses, getting the right number of lights for your tree can seem like a daunting task.

The style of lights you choose will, overall, affect the outcome of your display. We know our lighting range can seem pretty endless, and we do have sooo many to choose from, but there is an easy method to the madness, to help you find the perfect set of lights.

In this blog, we have put together some of our most popular images of wrapped trees, which all include how many lights we have used for our photography. Check through the blog to see them.

Let’s start at the beginning…

The type of bulb you choose will determine how bright your tree is going to look. For example, our classic festoon bulbs appear to produce a much brighter light than our filament style LED bulbs, due to the design of the light within the bulb.

Whichever one you go for, the spacing between each bulb will be the next path to take towards your perfect tree. If you want to achieve a fuller, brighter look, having the bulbs closer together will be your best friend.

If you would rather have your lights looking more sparingly placed, with just the right amount of added sparkle, then selecting a style with more space in-between each bulb will be the way to go!

The final part of our method is your wrapping style. This is all down to personal preference. When the lights are closer together and wrapped tightly, it produces a much brighter glow compared to draping the lights over.

Our connectable lights are a highly recommend choice for tree wrapping. No matter how big your tree is, you don’t need to ever worry about running out of lights, because you can simply just keep adding more and more!

Now, it may sound like a lot of lights, but if you prefer more of a full coverage wrapping style on the trunk and branches, then this is the quantity we recommend.

If you prefer less coverage, then you can’t go wrong with some festoons or our wire lights! To achieve a less densely populated look, you can either drape your lights over the tree, or wrap them less tightly around the trunk.

We hope this handy guide has helped you decide how many lights you need for your tree, and don’t forget to share your outdoor tree light images on Twitter or tag us on Instagram, making sure to use our hashtag #ShareTheJoy – and we’ll share our favourites!
