It’s almost a month until the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, so we thought it was the perfect time to get together some of our favourite wedding trends for spring/summer 2018, and although no one sets wedding trends quite like the royals, we thought we might speculate on what this year’s celebrations could have in store.
A royal invitation
First impressions count and that couldn’t be truer than for your invitations. This year we’ve seen a lot of hand-painted invites with calligraphy and foil stamping; this might not be that dissimilar to the royal invites.
We’ve definitely seen a move from rose golds and coppers to brass and golds recently, not just in weddings but in interiors too. As there’s nothing more lavish than adorning your wedding with gold, we wouldn’t be surprised if we saw hints of this trend in the royal wedding décor too.
Bold and brave
Another huge trend for weddings in 2018 is bold colours! Using one strong colour throughout your wedding can be wonderfully chic, but if you’re unsure about how to pull this look off, then why not try a single colour bouquet? This is especially good if the rest of your décor or bridal party choices are starting to look a little too fussy. A single colour bouquet can be a great way to refocus your look, and tie themes together. We also envisage that Pantone’s colour of the year, UltraViolet, will be cropping up a lot this year, and as there’s nothing more regal than purple, we will definitely be looking out for some lavender hues in this year’s royal wedding.
While we do think the young royals will stay fairly traditional when it comes to flowers, we’re expecting something slightly different from the rest of our 2018 brides. We expect to see aisles lined with potted plants, alters adorned with wildflowers and tables highlighted by high-hanging greenery and foliage.
Balloons and ball gowns
Now, this is probably one of our favourite wedding trends for 2018 and we definitely think we’ll be seeing more of it in the summer – balloons! Don’t be put off, we don’t want weddings to look like fairgrounds, but when done right, these large round balloons can be a great symbol of fun and infinite love. However, we will admit, although we love this trend, and whilst these royals have already strayed away from tradition with their engagement photos, we still don’t think the Queen would approve of them covering St George’s Chapel in balloons … but we can still dream.
Long live the lighting
Similar to the floral arrangements, lighting will be much more modern this year. You can expect to see lots of geometric shapes in 2018, from geometric candle holders to angular lanterns and even geometric bulbs. The angles of this new style mean your lighting can work with the shape and style of your venue instead of around it, and these new bulbs make the perfect backdrop for your wedding photos.
And finally, speculations aside, of course the biggest wedding trends for this summer will naturally be whatever Prince Harry and Megan decide to do!
We have already heard rumours of a banana wedding cake and a dress by Burberry’s Christopher Bailey!
