5 Affordable Man Cave Lighting Ideas

I’ll come right out with it: the majority of our customers are women. Most of our followers on social media are women. It seems to be mostly women that buy lights, or at least our lights.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but it does lead you to question why. Do men not like lights; is that supposedly scientific research that men like the darkness because they’re inherently built to favour a cave-like environment actually accurate?

I’m a man (of sorts) and I can’t say that I generally favour dark places, although I do have to admit that I am quite liking dark bathroom/kitchen tiles at the moment… that’ll be the caveman in me then. I do also like lights though, and I’m not just saying that because I work here – I’ve always liked Christmas lights. Actually Christmas is one time of the year here that we often see the men clambering out of their caves to add to their displays. Why not during the year too then – are decorative lights not manly enough for us? Actually I just tend to think that we don’t generally go looking for them, and so maybe we don’t know what’s out there.

I’ve had a look around the internet and found some lighting products, and a few other home decor ideas, that I would make use of in my own home – be this in a ‘man cave’ or elsewhere. Some of them are products to buy and others are DIY projects – according to some stereotypes we’re meant to be quite good at that.

Admittedly not something that’s readily available right now, if you look in the right places you can hunt down a neon light with a distinctly male theme: Star Wars or Batman anyone? Maybe I’m just a geek, but I love these.

Update: we now sell neon lights, including the funky Batman light pictured below in our TV & Movie Themed Lights category!

Oh look a product that we actually sell, this will make the sales guys happy. Strip lighting can look great under cabinets, shelves, around mirrors and banisters. You can pick it up in a number of different colours with varying degrees of manliness. It might also save on electricity if it means not having to turn on the main lights as much.

I know, I know, lamps don’t scream masculinity, but if you’ll let me finish… if you’re prepared to get your hands a little dirty, a lampshade can quite easily be customised. This particular design might favour a younger person but the principal is there – the base has been spray painted and new fabric used to cover the existing design. A how to guide for the specific lamp featured in the image below is here.

Update: we now have some very cool Star Wars and DC Comics lamps in our TV & Movie Themed Lights category!

We’ve shown you how to do this on our blog before, but these bottle lights might be a little more acceptable for the gentlemen due to the choice of beverage. Just stuff some fairy lights into the bottle and away you go.

At the risk of sounding like someone with a problem, another use for those empty spirit bottles is to create a lamp. For this you’ll need to find a ‘bottle lamp kit’ which you can pick up online for under £5 if you search around. This basically allows you to use the bottle as the lamp base which can look really nice.

Below are just a selection of some of the brilliant, creative ideas that I found when doing research for this article (well aware that some will be surprised that this took actual research). Let us know if you’ve seen any lights that the target audience for Yorkie chocolate bars would appreciate.
