Indoor Christmas wreaths are swiftly becoming more and more popular and are often used to help tie indoor and outdoor seasonal décor together. But Christmas is for fun. It’s for magic and causing a bit of mischief, so we thought we’d get a bit creative with our latest DIY and marry the tradition of a wreath with the magic of mythology…
Perfect for bringing a bit of festive fun to your home, we’ve made this super easy indoor gonk wreath using our very own Firefly Wire Fairy Lights. If you want to see how we made our cheeky chap, check out our YouTube video below.
Things you’ll need:
- Plastic hat frame (we removed the tinsel from this Witches hat from Amazon for our frame)
- 10cm polystyrene ball
- Battery powered warm white Fairy Lights (we used our dazzling Firefly Wire Fairy Lights)
- White 2ft Christmas tree
- Christmas hat
- Christmas foliage
- Strong scissors or wire snips
- Hot glue gun
Step-by-Step:
- Start by trimming the branches from the 2ft white Christmas tree. TOP TIP – We found it easier to start at the base of each branch. This way, the branches naturally differ in size and you can create a fuller looking beard for your gonk.
- Once all your branches have been cut, you can begin to build your beard. Start sticking your branches to the base of the hat frame using the hot glue gun to keep them in place. Ensure that the base is covered before working down and building out the beard.
- Wrap your wire lights securely around the polystyrene ball. TOP TIP – If you’re struggling to wrap the ball, a small dab from the glue gun will help keep your lights in place.
- Once fully wrapped, glue the battery pack to the back of the hat frame ensuring that the buttons and switches are facing you.
- Turn your gonk back over and secure the wrapped polystyrene ball into place with the hot glue gun. We’d recommend gluing this just below the start of the beard to create the traditional gonk ‘look’.
- Position the Christmas hat securely over the frame.
- The fun is in the finishing touches and it’s time to decorate your hat. We’ve opted for a delicate forest green bow and some festive foliage to really give him a Nordic nod.
- Finally, if the frame you opt to use doesn’t come with a hanging loop, simply cut a small hole at the tip of your hat, and tie some string to form a loop in order to hang your decoration.
